Hey there, fellow angler! Ready for a day of non-stop action on the mighty Columbia River? Our full-day rockfish and lingcod trip is the real deal. We're talking 8 solid hours of dropping lines, feeling that telltale tug, and hauling in some of Oregon's tastiest bottom-dwellers. And let me tell you, when a big ol' lingcod decides to chomp down on your bait, you're in for one heck of a fight! Plus, we've got a sweet little bonus for you crab lovers - add on some pot pulling, and you might just head home with dinner AND tomorrow's lunch. So grab your gear, slap on some sunscreen, and let's hit the water!
Picture this: You're cruising out of Astoria's harbor as the sun's just starting to peek over the horizon. The air's got that salty tang, and you can practically taste the adventure ahead. We'll motor out to some prime fishing grounds where the rockfish and lingcod love to hang out. Now, I'm not gonna lie - sometimes it takes a bit of searching to find the hot spot, but that's all part of the fun. Once we do, though, it's game on! You'll be jigging and bottom fishing, feeling those solid hits as the fish strike. And don't worry if you're new to this - our crew's always happy to show you the ropes. We'll help you bait up, give you pointers on your technique, and make sure you're in the best position to land the big one. Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife - we often spot seals, sea lions, and even the occasional whale spout off in the distance.
Alright, let's talk shop for a second. For this trip, we're using heavy-duty bottom fishing rods and reels, spooled up with braided line to really feel those bites. We'll rig you up with a variety of lures - metal jigs, plastic swimbaits, and good old-fashioned bait rigs. The key to success here is getting your offering right down on the bottom where these fish like to hang out. We'll be drifting over rocky reefs and structure, letting our baits dance just above the seafloor. When it comes to technique, it's all about the slow lift and drop. You want to entice those fish, make 'em think your lure is an easy meal. And when you feel that thump? Set the hook hard and start reeling! For the lingcod, we might switch it up and try some live bait fishing if the conditions are right. There's nothing quite like watching a big lingcod chase down a live bait - it's heart-pounding stuff!
Black Rockfish: These guys are the bread and butter of our fishery. They school up over rocky reefs and man, can they put up a fight for their size! Averaging 2-4 pounds, black rockfish hit hard and pull all the way to the surface. They're super aggressive, often racing each other to your bait. The best part? They make for some of the tastiest fish tacos you'll ever have. We target these bad boys year-round, but spring through fall is prime time when they're most active and feeding heavily.
Lingcod: Now we're talking about the true trophy of our waters. Lingcod are the apex predators of the reef, with a face only a mother could love and a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. These ambush predators can grow up to 40 pounds or more, though a good keeper is usually in the 10-20 pound range. They love to hang out around structure and rocky pinnacles, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting prey. Lingcod fishing is all about patience and precision - you've got to get your bait right in their face to tempt them. But when they bite, hold on tight! The fight is intense, and there's nothing quite like seeing those blue-tinged fillets hit the cutting board. Winter and early spring are fantastic for targeting the big ones, as they move into shallower water to spawn.
Let me tell you, there's something special about fishing these waters that keeps folks coming back year after year. Maybe it's the rush of battling a big lingcod as it tries to dive back to its rocky lair. Or perhaps it's the non-stop action of a hot rockfish bite, where you're pulling in fish two at a time. But I think what really hooks people is the whole package - the stunning views of the Oregon coastline, the camaraderie that builds over a day on the water, and that sense of accomplishment when you're heading back to port with a cooler full of fresh fillets. And let's not forget the stories - every trip seems to produce at least one tale of "the one that got away" or an epic battle with a monster fish. It's the kind of day that leaves you tired, happy, and already planning your next trip before you even hit the dock.

Black rockfish are one of our most common catches, typically 2-5 pounds with larger ones pushing 8-10 pounds. They hang out in schools near kelp beds, reefs, and rocky structures from the surface down to about 120 feet. These opportunistic feeders will chase just about any bait or lure you throw at them. Summer and early fall are peak seasons when they're most active. Folks enjoy targeting them for their aggressive bites, sporty fights on light tackle, and tasty white fillets. A local trick: when you find a school, drop a shrimp fly or small jig tipped with a piece of squid. Let it flutter down naturally – the competitive fish will often race to grab it before it sinks out of sight. It's not unusual to limit out quickly once you're on a hot spot.

Lingcod are the bruisers of our local waters. These aggressive predators can grow up to 5 feet long, with most catches in the 10-30 pound range. You'll find them lurking near rocky bottoms and reefs, anywhere from 30 to 300 feet deep. They're ambush hunters with huge mouths full of sharp teeth, ready to snap up anything that fits. Spring and fall are prime seasons, but we catch them year-round. Anglers love lingcod for their hard-fighting spirit and excellent table fare. To land a big one, try slow-jigging a heavy metal lure near the bottom – let it sit still occasionally to mimic wounded prey. Just be ready when that rod doubles over – these fish don't give up easily!
